Egypt grants several types of residence permits to foreigners to allow them to stay on its territory for various reasons. The Director of the Passports, Immigration and Nationality Department determines the conditions and documents required to obtain residence permits.

Special residence for foreigners in Egypt:
Special residence permits for foreigners in Egypt are valid for 10 years, renewable upon request. The following conditions are required for these types of residence permits to be granted to foreigners:Foreigners born in Egypt before the date of publication of Legal Decree No. 74 of 1952, whose residency had not been terminated by the date of requesting this law. Foreigners who had resided in the Arab Republic of Egypt for 20 years before the date of publication of Legal Decree No. 74 of 1952, whose residency had not been terminated by the date of requesting this law, and who entered the country through legal means.Foreigners who have been residing in the Arab Republic of Egypt for more than five years and whose residency has been regularly renewed up to the date of application of this law, and who entered the country legally, in addition to foreigners who have been residing for more than five years under the same conditions in two cases, if they are practicing work that is beneficial to the national economy or providing scientific, cultural or artistic services to the country.Scientists, writers, artists, industrialists, economists and others who provide distinguished services to the country and in relation to it a decision shall be made by the Minister of Interior.
Regular residence for foreigners in Egypt
Regular residence for foreigners in Egypt is entitled to residence for a period of 5 years, subject to renewal. These types of residence permits are for foreigners who had resided in the Arab Republic of Egypt for 15 years before the date of the publication of Legal Decree No. 74 of 1952 and had not ceased their residence until the date of application this law and entered the country by legal means.
Temporary residence:
Those who do not meet the above conditions.
Members of this category are granted a renewable residence permit for up to one year. However, by decision of the Minister of the Interior, a residence permit may be granted for a period of up to 5 years, subject to renewal, depending on the circumstances and situations under which the decision is issued.


Tourist residency for foreigners in Egypt:
Within one month of arrival, a person arriving in Egypt must apply for a three-month residency permit (except for Syrians, who have six months) and must apply to renew the residency thereafter.
Educational residency for foreigners in Egypt:
It is the easiest form of residency. Once registered at school or university, a non-tourist residence permit is granted for one year, renewable. This type of permit gives the right to travel and return, but does not authorize work.
Work Residency for Foreigners in Egypt:
A work permit can be issued to all foreigners for a period of one year or less and can be issued for a period of more than one year after paying the prescribed fees. The work permit is granted to those who hold a work permit from the Labor Office and includes employees of companies and factories licensed in Egypt.

A temporary residence permit can be renewed for five years for foreigners for the following categories:
Investors.
Egyptians who lost their Egyptian citizenship as a result of obtaining a foreign nationality without retaining their Egyptian nationality, as well as their minor children who were covered by this permit.
Children of an Egyptian mother.
Children who were granted Egyptian nationality from their parents.
Children who have reached the age of majority are supported by their mothers, who are entitled to special or regular residence, or for five years in the event of the father’s death.
Those who are over 60 years of age and have settled in the country for 10 years and have the means to live.
Foreigners entitled to residency for five years under international agreements. Egyptian wives and widows.
Wives of foreigners who are entitled to normal residence.
Wives and children of foreigners who are granted temporary residence for a period of five years in the previous cases.
Ownership residence
For a period of 5 years, renewable, for those who own one or more properties in Egypt with a value of at least US$200,000.
For a period of 3 years, renewable, for those who own one or more properties in Egypt with a value of at least US$100,000.
For a period of one year, renewable for those who own one or more properties in Egypt with a value of at least 50,000 US dollars.
Investor’s residence
According to Egyptian law and the regulations applied by the Egyptian Passports and Immigration Administration and the General Investment Authority, granting residency in Egypt to a foreign investor (Investor’s residence) varies according to the law regulating the company (under the umbrella of Investment Law No. 72 of 2017, or Law No. 159 of 1981).
